Our Countdown to The Last Jedi has had no winners yet, not even anyone guessing, so for today's question let me introduce Asajj Ventress.

 

Ventress, or Asajj Ventress as is her character's full name, was a character from Dathomir.  Born into the Force witch cult on Dathomir she was given over and sold into slavery on a war torn world, a crash landed Jedi sensed her ability to use the force and he raised the young girl for over a decade helping protect the planet from alien invaders until her Jedi Master was killed.  She would later be discovered by the Sith and would serve as a Sith assassin and hopeful Apprentice, however was never made a full Sith Apprentice.  She also served in a unique dark side-light side assassin team put together by the Jedi Council to discover the true identity of the Dark Lord of the Sith (Darth Sidious) through his Apprentice, former Jedi master, Darth Tyrannus (Count Dooku) -- A partnership put into place by the Jedi Council, eventually Ventress and her Jedi partner would fall in love and upon her death saving his life, he would deliver her body back to her home planet for a proper funeral among her people, the Nightsisters.

Our Countdown to Justice League was successful, in my little opinion and by my lowly standards, so this time we are going to Countdown to Star Wars Episode 8 (or VIII as they will probably label it, safest to call it The Last Jedi, the subtitle of this Episode in the epic series) and in our Countdown we will look at little known facts or characters, maybe associated with the current series, maybe connected to the Star Wars Legacy Universe (the comics and novels before Disney bought Star Wars), or even just connected to the original or prequel trilogies and maybe, just maybe an animated series factoid.  

Aurra Sing was a bounty hunter we first see in Episode I: The Phantom Menance for just a moment during the racing scene on Tattooine.  Through comics and novels considered "Legends" now but being published by the authorized Lucasfilm companies with their approval we learn Aurra Sing was once trained as a Jedi, served with a alien vampiric cult, worked as a bounty hunter with a particular liking to hunting Jedi and collecting the lightsabers of all those she killed.

What was the real name of Darth Kryat, the leader of the One Sith Order in the Star Wars Legacy comic series from Dark Horse Comics beginning in 2003? The answer was A'Sharad Hett, a former Jedi Master that was the son of Jedi Knight Sharad Hett and K'Sheek, a human slave abducted and assimilated into the tribe of the Sand People. Hett became a Padawan of Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi and later his education in the Force was continued by The Dark Woman, a female Jedi Master that gave up her birth name in service to the Force. Hett served the Galactic Republic as a General during the Clone Wars and survived Order 66 and fled to his home world of Tatooine where he faced Obi-Wan Kenobi and learned Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker, a fellow Jedi with whom Hett had served with. Hett blamed himself for the raise of the Sith and fled before crashing on the Sith world of Korriban where he began to learn the way of the Sith.

Our Countdown to Justice League was successful, in my little opinion and by my lowly standards, so this time we are going to CountDown to Star Wars Episode 8 (or VIII as they will probably label it, safest to call it The Last Jedi, the subtitle of this Episode in the epic series) and in our CountDown we will look at little known facts or characters, maybe associated with the current series, maybe connected to the Star Wars Legacy Universe (the comics and novels before Disney bought Star Wars), or even just connected to the original or prequel trilogies and maybe, just maybe an animated series factoid.  

What was the original name of Darth Kryat?  The name "kryat" comes from the kryat dragon from his homeworld.  (Hint there) -- Darth Kryat formed the One Sith after training becoming stranded on  Korriban and training with one of the first Sith Lords, Lady Xoxaan.  He left Korriban and ran into the Yuuzhan Vong, invaders from another galaxy that detested technology but instead use biological weapons, biotechnology and believe in scaring themselves, tattooing and cutting or having implants to make themselves closer to their Gods.  Kryat ran into them and was tortured and portions of him, his artificial arm lost in battle as a Jedi was replaced with an organic one, one of his eyes was replaced with a Vong creature..  He returned to Korriban and waited for over a hundred years, building his strength and his Sith Army.  Some joined Darth Caedus, the grandson of Darth Vader, but his attempt at taking control of the New Republic and the renewed Jedi Order was fruitless.  Meanwhile, Darth Kryat trained and eventually seized his opportunity to become the leader of the galaxy.  

Darth Kryat, unlike the Sith that came before, abandoned the Rule of Two (Master and Apprentice) and took on may Sith Lords; Darth Maladi, Darth Wyylock, Darth Talon, Darth Nihl, He has many Sith Lords, Sith Apprentices, and raw recruits.  But he did not begin as Darth Kryat no more than Senator Palpatine started out to become the Emperor.

Countdown to Justice League - 1 Day Left (Crime Syndicate)

1 Day to #JusticeLeague for me, so I will Countdown my Top 3 Choices for a future Justice League Villain(s) - The Crime Syndicate of America (CSA)

Writer Gardner Fox, the creator of so many iconic characters and villains, and artist Mike Sekowsky created the Crime Syndicate of America for Justice League of America issue 29 in 1964, the original volume 1 of that comic.  Now since then, various reboots have gone on including in 2000, 2007, and 2013.  The original members were from Earth-3, a multiverse version of our normal superheroes world where all the super-powered beings are evil and rule as dictators, and the original team was Ultraman, Superwoman, Owlman, Power Ring, and Johnny Quick.  


On their world, their are no heroes.  They try to invade several times, are bound in deep space, are wiped from existence, return, and the plot gets much thicker as 21st Century comic book writing takes on more of a soap opera, very onion like multi-layered stories than the simple stories of the 1960 and even 1970s.  

Since it's inception and in various multiverse realities, there have been an expansion to the original members including Grid, Deathstorm, Atomica, and Sea King.  The main Trinity, though, Ultraman, Superwoman, and Owlman were involved in a tense love triangle with Lois Lane (Superwoman) both married to Ultraman (who kryptonite makes stronger) and having an affair with Owlman.  Pregnant when her team makes an invasion in the latest storyline, telling both Ultraman and Owlman that they are the father of her unborn child.  But, the only superhero from their world, Alexander Luthor, has become the anti-"Captain Marvel" or Shazam (known on Earth-3 as Mazahs) is revealed to be the father of her child, who is kidnapped at birth by Grail, the daughter of Darkseid born to an Amazon the same night as Diana, Wonder Woman, to become the vessel for a reborn Darkseid and whose parent, Superwoman is destroyed.  Owlman was still at large as of the end of that story and has yet to resurface.  A great, complex storyline that would see Superman vs evil Ultraman, Batman fighting Owlman (his big brother that never existed from the Affleck Batman), Sea King verses Aquaman, Wonder Woman takes on Superwoman.  I'd pay $10 to see that on the big screen a few times and get the DVD, digital download version plus some swag.

Countdown Day 2 - Justice League Villain (SSoSV)

2 Days to #JusticeLeague for me, so I will Countdown my Top 3 Choices for a future Justice League Villain - Secret Society of Super Villains (SSoSV).  

The Society was the idea of writer Gerry Conway and  Pablo Marcus did the art for the first appearance of the group in the May-June 1976 issue of their own self-titled series.  This Secret Society was formed to battle an android Darkseid.  It consisted of Lex Luthor, the Wizard, Gorilla Grodd and others.  

By 1980s the Secret Society of Super-Villains (SSoSV) had Rag Doll, Cheetah, Killer Frost, Signalman, Brain Wave, Psycho Pirate with the Ultra-Humanite as their leader and they almost completely defeated both the Justice League and Justice Society.

The next group in DC's New 52 universe had Black Adam, Lex Luthor, Deathstroke, and the Calculator.  Then came the version of the team, just called The Society, lead by The Outsider and this Society had over 500 super-villain members around the globe and was to assist the invading Crime Syndicate from Earth-3, as The Outsider turned out to be the Earth-3 Alfred Pennyworth, butler of Thomas Wayne, Jr., Crime Syndicate member Owlman.

3 Days to #JusticeLeague for me, so I will Countdown my Top 3 Choices for a future Justice League Villain - Chronos

The character of David Clinton, the super-villain Chronos was created by Gardner Fox & Gil Kane and first appeared in The Atom issue 3 in November of 1962. A petty criminal, David Clinton, was always getting caught & jailed due to his back luck and poor timing; while incarcerated he started studying time and watches & began committing time based crimes and using watch or time based gizmos wearing a green and yellow costume. Thwarted by The Atom time after time, eventually his continued studies of time lead to real time travel either by a fellow bandit already using time travel or a future version of himself.

Chronos would eventually battle the Green Lantern and other heroes, using time travel and even taking on the full Justice League of America alone & with the Secret Society of Super-Villains, the Injustice League, and the Suicide Squad.

The cinematic debut of The Justice League is in 2 days, and to countdown let's take a look at members of the Justice League most have forgotten or never knew about.

The version of Hourman that was a member of the Justice League of America was created by Grant Morrison and Howard Porter and first appeared in JLA issue 12 in November of 1997.  This Hourman was known as Matthew Tyler and would have superhuman strength, speed, invulnerability, flight, laser vision and manipulation of space-time.   This Hourman was an 853rd century android (though he describes himself as an "intelligent machine colony") constructed by Tyler Chemorobotics (formerly TylerCo). Although he is an android, he possesses the full range of emotions and human flaws that an ordinary human does. Nonetheless, the technology with which he was constructed is far advanced beyond anything conceivable in the 20th century.

Why the android was built is unknown, although it seems likely that he was in fact commissioned by the New God Metron, who sought to make it his replacement and apprentice. Rex Tyler (the original Hourman), who served as the biological template for the android, spent some time in the future and was involved in its construction.

The original Hourman, Rex Tyler, was created by Ken Fitch and Bernard Baily and first appeared in Adventure Comics issue 48 in March 1940.  This Hourman was a member of the Justice Society of America, the All-Star Squadron, and the Freedom Fighters.  The android Hourman briefly used the alias Matthew Tyler and he considered himself at times both as Rex Tyler and as a descendant of Rex Tyler.  The android Hourman was destroyed in Rex's place during a battle with the villain Extant giving his hourglass to Rex with the hopes that Rex would one day rebuild him.

The cinematic debut of The Justice League is in 3 days, and to countdown let's take a look at members of the Justice League most have forgotten or never knew about.

The Jesse Quick that would serve on the Justice League was created Angelo Javier for the 1992 Justice Society of America, volume 2, issue 1.  Jesse Quick was the secret hero identity of Jesse Chambers.  Jesse was the daughter of the Earth-2 World War Two era heroes Johnny Quick (Johnny Chambers) and Liberty Belle (Elizabeth "Libby" Belle) and she would use both the "Jesse Quick" persona and the Liberty Belle persona.  

In December 2006 she debuted as Liberty Belle. Jesse marries the second Hourman, Rick Tyler, and they work as a duo within the Justice Society, until the team splits into a smaller Justice Society and a new incarnation of the All-Stars. In 2010, she joins the Justice League of America.

Jesse Quick appears in season 2 of the TV series The Flash, portrayed by Violett Beane.  A native of Earth 2, Jesse Chambers Wells (nicknamed "Jesse Quick") is the daughter of Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh), and is held hostage by Hunter Zolomon/Zoom early in the season, forcing her father to travel to Earth-1 to team up with Barry Allen/The Flash (Grant Gustin) and his friends. Later in the season, they successfully rescue Jesse from Zoom, and during an attempt at recreating the Flash's original accident to restore his powers, she is bathed in dark matter energy. Barry is able to use the Speed Force to bring Jesse out of her coma, and she does not appear to manifest any special abilities. After Zoom is defeated in the season 2 finale, Jesse returns to Earth-2 alongside her father. She returned in season 3 as a speedster superhero with the name Jesse Quick. Her super speed awakened due to the delayed effects of the dark matter, and her father was hesitant about her desire to become a superhero. Eventually, he's convinced after Jesse aids Flash in defeating Magenta, gives Jesse a new costume, and decides that the two should stay in Earth-1 for a bit for Barry to teach Jesse more about her powers.  Eventually, Jesse returns to her world with her father to help protect it, essentially becoming a Flash under the name "Jesse Quick", to restore hope after Zoom has tarnished the Flash name on Earth-2 when he masqueraded under the identity. Later, she returns to request help from Team Flash as her father had been captured by Grodd and was being held captive in Gorilla City. After he is rescued, Jesse decides to stay with Wally West on Earth-1. When Wally gets trapped in the Speed Force, Jesse goes after Savitar and finds out that he's mortal after she finds a weak spot in his armor and weakens him. She then finds out that Savitar has plans for her and leaves Earth-1 for Earth-3 to take over for Jay Garrick while he's trapped in the Speed Force until Jay is freed and Savitar is defeated. In season 4, revealed that Jesse returned to Earth-2 after Savitar's death, and she builds a team of superheroes to combat the remnants of Zoom's followers and other criminals. However, she also breaks up with Wally due to their preoccupations.

The cinematic debut of The Justice League is in 4 days, and to countdown let's take a look at members of the Justice League most have forgotten or never knew about.

Metamorpho was created by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon and first appeared in The Brave and the Bold issue 57 in January of 1965.  

Rex Mason is an adventurer who is hired by Stagg Enterprises CEO, Simon Stagg, to retrieve a rare Egyptian artifact, the Orb of Ra. Shortly after hiring him, Simon Stagg learns that Mason has been dating his daughter, Sapphire Stagg. This and other incidents begin to fuel in Stagg a dislike for Mason that ultimately leads to a plot to kill him.

In an Egyptian pyramid, Rex Mason is knocked out by Simon's brutish bodyguard Java and is eventually exposed to a radioactive meteorite from which the Orb of Ra was fashioned. A tremendous flare-up of its radiation transforms Mason into Metamorpho, the Element Man. He gains the ability to shapeshift and change himself into any element or combination of elements found in the human body. It is also established in his origin story (see: The Brave & The Bold #57) that Metamorpho is virtually invulnerable in his inert (untransformed) state, when Stagg, afraid that Rex is going to kill him, shoots him point-blank without effect. The Orb of Ra, however, has the same effect on Rex that kryptonite has on Superman. Thus Stagg continues to control Metamorpho using the Orb. Later, it is revealed that Mason is but one of many metamorphae, created by the sun god Ra – using the meteorite – to serve as warriors in his battle against the god Apep, "the serpent who never dies."

Metamorpho, unlike most super-humanoids described in DC Comics, cannot assume a normal, fully human appearance, being no longer composed of flesh, blood and bone. As such, he regards his metamorphic powers as a disease and seeks a cure for his condition. Because he considers himself a freak and wishes only to be restored to his former human state, he rejects an offer of membership from the Justice League of America. Green Lantern attempts to change him back using his power ring, but due to a "yellow" component of the meteorite radiation, is unable to make him normal again. 

Metamorpho would later serve in the Justice League of America along with the Justice League Europe and Justice League International teams.

The cinematic debut of The Justice League is in 5 days, and to countdown let's take a look at members of the Justice League most have forgotten or never knew about.

 

Crimson Fox was created by Keith Giffen and Bart Sears and first appeared in Justice League Europe issue 6 in September 1989.  Crimson Fox was the superhero identity of identical twins Vivian and Constance D'Aramis who ran Revson, a major Parisian perfume company, which may have explained their pheromone control powers.  They also had animal speed and agility.  

 

In order to make their heroic actions easier, the sisters faked Constance's death so that one could operate as Crimson Fox while the other attended business meetings and functions.  Vivian was killed for real by a supervillain in October of 1995 and Constance was killed by a different supervillain in January of 1998.  

 

A new Crimson Fox appeared in 2006 in Green Lantern, volume 4, issue 11 but her identity was never revealed.  She did tell the Hal Jordan Green Lantern that she was the heiress to the D'Aramis fortune, although her relationship to the original sisters remains unknown.  An alternate version of Crimson Fox appeared in the now cancelled television series Powerless, portrayed first by Atlin Mitchell in the pilot episode "Wayne Or Lose" and later by Deanna Russo in subsequent episodes.

The cinematic debut of The Justice League is in 6 days, and to countdown let's take a look at members of the Justice League most have forgotten or never knew about.

 

Power Girl also known as Kara and Karen Starr made her first appearance in All Star Comics #58, January 1976. Power Girl is the cousin of Superman, but from Earth-2, first envisioned as the home of DC's wartime heroes as published in 1940s comic books.   Power Girl becomes stranded on the main universe where DC stories are set, and becomes acquainted with that world's Superman and her own counterpart, Supergirl. In common with Supergirl's origin story, she is the daughter of Superman's aunt and uncle and a native of the planet Krypton. The infant Power Girl's parents enabled her to escape the destruction of her home planet by placing her in a rocket ship. Although she left the planet at the same time that Superman did, her ship took much longer to reach Earth-2.

 

The character's origins are changed multiple times over the years especially after the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline when Earth-2 no longer existed.  However, under the current storylines, Power Girl is once again showed as having come from Earth-2 that was destroyed and fled to the mainstream Earth before relocating to a newly recreated Earth-2 home for those heroes.

 

 

 

Forgotten Justice League - Day 7 (Hawkgirl)

The cinematic debut of The Justice League is in 7 days, and to countdown let's take a look at members of the Justice League most have forgotten or never knew about.

 

The original Hawkgirl was created by Garner Fox and Dennis Neville and first appeared in Flash Comics issue 1 in January 1940.  One of DC's earliest super-heroines, Hawkgirl has appeared in many of the company's flagship team-up titles including Justice Society of America and Justice League of America.

 

Several incarnations of Hawkgirl have appeared in DC Comics, all of them characterized by the use of archaic weaponry and artificial wings, attached to a harness made from the special Nth metal that allows flight. Most incarnations of Hawkgirl work closely with a partner/romantic interest Hawkman.

 

Since DC's continuity was rewritten in the 1985 series Crisis on Infinite Earths, Hawkgirl history has become muddled with several new versions of the character appearing throughout the years, some associated with ancient Egypt and some with the fictional planet Thanagar. These versions of the character have starred in several series of various durations.  Hawkgirl was asked to join the JLA in Justice League of America, volume 1, issue 146.  

 

A version of Hawkgirl named Kendra Saunders and played by Ciara Renée made a cameo appearance in the first-season finale episode of CW's television series The Flash, titled "Fast Enough." She also dates Barry Allen's best friend Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) prior to meeting Carter Hall/Hawkman (Falk Hentschel). In "Legends of Today", Kendra and Hall are targeted by Vandal Savage (Casper Crump), leading Barry and Cisco to seek Oliver Queen's (Stephen Amell) aid against the immortal. From this encounter, Kendra learns that she is the re-incarnation of an ancient Egyptian warrior priestess named Chay-ara, and that she can transform into the winged, vicious Hawkgirl. In the Arrow crossover episode "Legends of Yesterday," Kendra and Carter join Barry and Oliver's fight against Savage, but although they are killed in the initial confrontation, Barry manages to travel back in time and avert their defeat, providing Kendra with the necessary incentive to remember her and Carter's original death and work out a means of taking the staff from Savage. Despite learning her destiny with Carter, Kendra remains affectionate with Cisco. Renée reprises her role from The Flash as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl in the CW's DC's Legends of Tomorrow, where she joins Rip Hunter's team against Vandal Savage. During their search, it is revealed that Savage can only die for good if he is stabbed by Kendra- or one version of her- with a dagger that Chay-ara was holding when she died the first time, with the first attempt to kill him resulting in Carter's death when Carter attempts to kill Savage himself. During the course of the series, she develops a new relationship with Ray Palmer, which becomes more complex when they spend two years trapped in the 1950s posing as a married couple due to the tensions of an inter-racial couple in that era after the rest of the team are forced to leave them behind, as well as the complexities of her long-term 'relationship' with Carter. She reunited with Carter who's reincarnated as Scythian Torvil, one of Savage's soldiers, in "Leviathan".
