Day 9 - Forgotten #JusticeLeague
Martian Manhunter
Forgotten Justice League members:
The cinematic debut of The Justice League is in 9 days, and to countdown let's take a look at members of the Justice League most have forgotten or never knew about.
Martian Manhunter was one of the seven founding member of the original Justice League of America appearing in the team's very first appearance in The Brave and the Bold issue 28 in March 1960. The character was created by Joseph Samachson and Joe Certa and appeared in Detective Comics number 225 in November of 1955.
The character's real name is J'onn J'onzz and is from the planet Mars. Originally trapped by a scientist's experiment on Earth, he eventually adopts the human disguise of John Jones, a private detective. The character is a green skinned humanoid with super-human strength and durability along with flight, mind control and other powers like the ability to shape shift and change his outward appearance.
He eventually reveals himself to the world and is a founding member of the Justice League of America. His one weakness is fire.
J'onn J'onzz is played by David Ogden Stiers in the 1997 Justice League of America live-action television pilot. He has difficulty shapeshifting, being only able to impersonate others for a short period of time, and no mention is made of any other powers. He was also played by Miguel Ferrer when he temporarily changes into Weatherman (Miguel's character in the film).
Phil Morris portrays Martian Manhunter in the Smallville television series. In this show, he is portrayed as an old friend of Jor-El who came to Earth to monitor Kal-El and assist him when he needed it, aiding Clark Kent in defeating the escaped Phantom Zone prisoners. The Manhunter sacrifices his powers at the beginning of season eight to save Clark from a fatal wound, but after joining the Metropolis Police Department under the name John Jones, he is restored to full strength mid-season nine by Doctor Fate.
Martian Manhunter appears on Supergirl, played by David Harewood. The character operates under the guise of Hank Henshaw. In "Human for a Day", it is revealed he took Henshaw's identity after the latter died in an attempt to kill him. He also appears in "Hostile Takeover", and "Childish Things", which reveals he has been living on Earth for 50 years, "Strange Visitor from Another Planet", in which he is forced to expose his identity. At the end of the season, reinstated as director of the Department of Extranormal Operations, he chooses to retain Hank Henshaw's form.
